About Zanzibar
A Fisherman’s Story
My name is Mzee Juma.
I am a fisherman from Zanzibar.
Every morning, before the island wakes up, I push my boat into the turquoise water.
The sea has taught me patience, respect, and memory.
Zanzibar has a long memory.
Before the hotels, before the music, before travelers arrived from far away, there was the ocean, the wind, and Stone Town — with its carved wooden doors, narrow streets, and stories whispered by the walls.
Here, Africa met Arabia, India, and Europe. Cultures blended naturally, shaped by time and the sea.

We are a Muslim island.
Our faith guides our days, our rhythm, and our way of welcoming others.
In Zanzibar, strangers are never strangers for long.
You are invited to sit, to listen, to share tea, and to understand
Tourism has changed the island. It brought work, hope, and new opportunities, helping Zanzibar rise again. But Zanzibar has never forgotten who it is. The call to prayer still floats over the rooftops of Stone Town, fishermen still read the tides, children still play along the shore, and the water remains that same unforgettable shade of turquoise.
Zanzibar grows, but Zanzibar remains Zanzibar. That is why I thank Travel Memories Zanzibar for listening to the people of the island, for giving us a voice, and for inviting travelers not only to visit, but to truly experience Zanzibar while respecting its soul and preserving its authenticity.
